This way of taking a temperature is often used in babies and small children. In adults, it is used in cases of hypothermia, since it is the most accurate method. In cases o hypothermia it is necessary to use a special low reading thermometer, since the temperatures recorded are often much lower than those found on a conventional thermometer. Rectal temperatures are also taken in intensive care units, when an electronic probe may be used to give a constant record of the temperature; this can be compared with a similar probe taped to the big toe. The difference between the two temperatures is an indication of how efficient the heart is being at pumping blood.
