The development of the teeth and jaws is mainly controlled by the genetic factors inherit from the parents. Each individual, however, has a unique assortment of genes and it’s possible, for example, for a child to inherit large teeth from one parent and small jaws from the other, leading to overcrowding. Teeth in irregular position can, however, usually be aligned and made to bite together by the use of orthodontic appliances.

Does an impacted wisdom tooth always have to be removed?

An impacted wisdom tooth is one which is unable to grow properly because its path of eruption is blocked, usually by the tooth in front. Some impacted wisdom teeth are highly prone to infection, especially those which are only partially through the gum. Such teeth are best removal requires the loss of an excessive amount of bone. Some impacted wisdom teeth, during their development, may contributed to overcrowding of the lower incisors and should therefore be removed. A dentist will decide which is the appropriate course of action.

My sister’s baby was born with tooth that had to be removed. Does this mean that there will be one missing when the teeth finally erupt?

About one in 5000 babies are born with one or two teeth already present in the mouth-Julius Caesar and Napoleon, for example, are both reputed to have had this distinction. It sometimes runs in families. These teeth are not fully formed and will fall out, occasionally, however, they present a danger of choking the baby, and so it’s better to have them removed. The teeth will develop normally later on.

Does a high temperature help fight infection?

For the most part no, so far as we know. Only two types of infections have been shown to be inhibited in their growth by the sorts of temperature the body reaches during a fever, and these are the two venereal diseases syphilis and gonorrhea. My temperature always seems low, does this mean that i am never at my best?

No it is quite normal for your temperature to run a little lower than average. In fact, the normal range of temperature is quite wide-anything between 35.6C-37.2C (96F-99F). If you are exercising quite hard, does the temperature of your body go up? Yes. But there is a wide difference between the temperatures of various parts of the body. Doctors often refer to the core temperature, and this means the presumed by taking the rectal temperature. The core temperature of someone doing hard exercise may be very much higher than normal, with figures as high as 39C (102F).

Is it true that twins exhibit the same personality traits?

Twins who have been brought up together, whether they are identical or fraternal, tend to develop different personality traits, most probably as a way of expressing and establishing their independence. One twin might become more studious, the other more sociable.

What is interesting however is that pairs of monozyggotic twins (identical twins, formed from a single ovum) exhibit almost identical personality traits if they are bought up separately. Many studies have been made recently on twins separated at, or shortly after, birth. The results are a strong argument for the idea that many personality traits are indeed inherited.

My five-year-old daughter has asthma I smoked very heavily during my pregnancy. Could this have caused her condition? There is no longer any doubt that the children of mothers who smoke during pregnancy do have substantial disadvantages. In particular, they have a generally lower level of resistance which makes them more likely to get infectious diseases, and they are usually slower to develop both physically and mentally. However, there is no evidence that the presence of asthma in young children can be attributed to the mother smoking when pregnant. The catch-phrase dying for a cigarette’ is brutally apt. fatal smoking-related diseases constitute a genuine epidemic—and one that is solely in the hands of the potential victims to combat.

Smoking the dried leaves of the tobacco plant—in the form of cigarettes, cigars or in pipes—was introduced into England around the middle of the 16th century by explorers and adventurers who had found the practice established in the New World. Consumption of tobacco in the United Kingdom continued to increase till 1973, and then began to fall, but it remains among the most common habits in the western world. Unfortunately it is an extremely dangerous habit with no less than lethal consequences for a very large proportion of those who indulge in it. And it is a very hard one to break.
