Each tooth consist of two parts: the ‘crown’ , which is the portion visible within the mouth, and the ‘root’, which is the part embedded within the jaw-bone. The roots of the teeth are usually longer than the crowns. Front teeth have only one root, while those placed further back generally have two or three roots. The major structural element of a tooth is composed of a calcified tissue known as dentine. Dentine is a hard bone-like material which contains living cells.
